Every year, traffic fines in Norway are adjusted to keep up with price increases. From January 1st 2026, fines go up by 2.9%.

What does this mean for you?

If you break the rules while driving, it will cost you more. Here are some examples:

Using your phone while driving: 10,750 kr (was 10,450 kr)

This is one of the most common mistakes new drivers make. Just don’t do it! Pull over if you need to check your phone.

Running a red light: 10,750 kr (was 10,450 kr)

Red means stop. Always. No exceptions.

Not giving way when you should: 10,750 kr (was 10,450 kr)

Pay attention to yield signs and right-of-way rules. This is something you’ll practice a lot before your driving test.

Speeding (driving 61 km/h in a 50 zone): 5,950 kr (was 5,800 kr)

Even driving just a little too fast adds up quickly. The faster you go over the limit, the bigger the fine.

The bottom line

These fines are no joke – they can really hurt your wallet. But more importantly, the rules exist to keep everyone safe on the road. Focus on driving well during your lessons, and you’ll develop good habits that last a lifetime.

Good luck with your driving practice!
