Parking fines getting cheaper

New rules for parking companies, with better oversight.

Parking fines getting cheaper

After numerous complaints and allegations of cowboy practices in the parking industry, the Ministry of Transport is now taking action and introducing a series of new rules.

Among other things, parking attendants cannot give you a ticket until five minutes after your parking ticket has expired. The fine amount will also be standardized at either NOK 300, 600, or 900 depending on the type of parking violation. The standard amount will be NOK 600. Illegal parking in a disabled space will be "rewarded" with a fee of NOK 900.

Parking attendants will also receive mandatory training, with oversight of the training. This will hopefully lead to fewer errors. If you still believe you’ve been treated unfairly, you can complain to the new parking complaints board. Parking companies must comply with the board’s decisions.

The rules tightening up the industry come into force on January 1, 2017.
