No more annual vehicle tax
You will instead pay a traffic insurance levy
From the new year, you will no longer pay annual vehicle tax directly to the state. Instead, you pay a traffic insurance levy to your insurance company, which then forwards these funds to the state. You don’t escape the tax – it’s just the practical arrangement that changes.
More flexible
There are no longer any deadlines for when the vehicle must be deregistered to avoid the annual tax. Instead, you pay an amount per day the vehicle is registered. The amount is invoiced together with your insurance. If you pay insurance monthly, the traffic insurance levy is also divided into 12 payments. If you sell the vehicle, you now only pay for the time you owned it. This should reduce disputes and confusion during ownership transfers. It will also no longer be possible to buy a vehicle with unpaid annual tax.
Slight rate changes
The opportunity is being used to make a small increase in the levies, except for electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles which are exempt from the traffic insurance levy.
