Drive nicely, get a discount!
Insurance company wants to monitor young drivers, and give discounts to those who drive carefully.
To get cheaper insurance with the current system, you have to drive safely for many years and avoid claims that result in loss of bonus. If you’re a new driver and want comprehensive insurance, you have a problem. You have no statistics to show, and the insurance will be expensive regardless. You have the right to buy liability insurance, and the insurance company is not allowed to set a price that is artificially high to avoid having a young person as a customer. When it comes to comprehensive insurance, however, they can raise the price significantly.
If you could prove that you were a skilled and responsible driver despite being new behind the wheel, insurance companies could offer a much lower premium. The insurance company Tryg now wants to give drivers the opportunity to prove they drive safely. As a reward for driving well, you will get a lower premium. The downside is that the car you drive must have monitoring equipment installed that records how the car is driven, and whether speed limits are respected.
The system will capture the following data:
- Position
- Acceleration
- Deceleration (braking)
- Engine RPM
- Speed relative to speed limits
- Cornering speed
The solution is developed by the Norwegian company Telemotix, and they will receive and store the data. Eventually, Tryg will only receive a score for each driver indicating how well they drive. Currently, the system is being tested, and during the trial period, Tryg will receive all recorded data.
The Data Protection Authority is involved and, according to Telemotix, has strict requirements. Among other things, all cars with the equipment installed must be clearly marked with a sticker in the window indicating that the vehicle is being monitored.
The trial period starts in March, and Tryg wants 1,000 test drivers to participate.
