FrP proposes 16-year age limit for microcars
Wants to lower the age limit from 18
The Progress Party (FrP) proposes lowering the age limit for driving microcars weighing over 150 kg. Currently, the age limit is 18 for vehicles over 150 kg, which includes most microcars. For microcars under 150 kg, the age limit is already 16.
According to FrP, the reasoning behind this proposal is improved traffic safety. The party’s transport policy spokesperson, MP Tor André Johnsen, says: "I clearly believe it’s an advantage for 16-year-olds to drive microcars. It will give them more experience and better driving skills. They will learn to handle a car, read and understand traffic, making the transition to a regular car much easier when they turn 18."
Safer than mopeds?
Johnsen also believes microcars are significantly safer than mopeds. However, current microcars have shown very poor results in crash tests compared to regular cars. While the microcar Toyota IQ achieves five stars, most microcars only manage one star. A direct comparison between mopeds and microcars is naturally much more difficult.
The Norwegian Public Roads Administration has already been asked by the Ministry of Transport to send a proposal for public consultation.
