Frequently asked questions
Who needs a boat licence in Norway?
A boat licence is mandatory for anyone born on or after 1 January 1980 who skippers a recreational vessel longer than 8 metres or with an engine over 25 hp (15 kW). Older skippers are exempt, but the knowledge is recommended for everyone.
How many errors can you have on the boat licence exam?
The boat licence exam has 50 questions and you can have a maximum of 10 errors — at least 40 of 50 must be correct, which corresponds to 80% accuracy.
How much does the boat licence exam cost and where do you take it?
The Norwegian Maritime Authority (Sjøfartsdirektoratet) owns the boating licence test scheme, while Norsk Test administers the exam at test centres across the country. The price varies between test centres – check the current price at your nearest test centre.
Do I need a licence for a small boat with an outboard motor?
If the boat is shorter than 8 metres and the engine is 25 hp (15 kW) or less, no licence is required. You must still obey the rules of the road at sea, carry proper safety equipment and avoid alcohol when skippering a boat.
Can I take the boat licence exam in English or another language?
The boat licence exam is offered in Norwegian and English at most test centres. Other languages may be available at some locations — check with your test centre before booking. On Prøve.no you can practise in Norwegian, English, Ukrainian, Polish and Arabic.
