Which of the following is a correct response to a call from a coast radio station?
When you answer a call, you first say the name of the station that called you, then "this is", and finally your own vessel name. Each name is said no more than three times, often twice. The order is the same as in the call itself, just reversed: the station you are talking to comes first.

How many errors can you have on the VHF exam?
The VHF exam has 35 questions and you can have a maximum of 7 errors — at least 28 of 35 must be correct, which corresponds to 80% accuracy.
How long does the VHF exam take?
You have 90 minutes for the theory part of the exam. The practical radio-operation part is taken separately with an approved examiner.
Who runs the VHF exam and how much does it cost?
From 2026 the Norwegian Maritime Authority (Sjøfartsdirektoratet) runs the VHF/SRC exam. You sit it online from home via "Min side – sjøfolk", and the Authority issues the certificate (Telenor Kystradio ran the exam previously). The exam costs a fee set by the Authority – around NOK 700.
Do I need a VHF certificate to use a marine radio?
Yes. To operate a VHF radio on a leisure or commercial vessel you need an SRC (Short Range Certificate). The certificate is personal and valid for life, but rules are updated regularly so a refresher is useful.
What is the difference between MAYDAY, PAN-PAN and SECURITE?
MAYDAY is used when there is grave and imminent danger to life and immediate help is required. PAN-PAN is an urgency call for a serious but not immediately life-threatening situation. SECURITE is a safety message warning of navigational or weather hazards.
