An example from the question set
What is the minimum age to obtain a class C driving licence (heavy truck) without YSK training?
Without professional driver competence (YSK), the minimum age for a class C driving licence is 21 years. With full YSK training (280 hours), however, one can obtain class C from as early as 18 years.
The age requirements are differentiated by driving licence class and type of training. For class C1 (light truck), the age requirement is 18 years without YSK. For bus classes, the requirements are higher: D1 from 21 years and D from 24 years without YSK. With full YSK training, the age can be lowered to 21 years for D1 and 21 years for D (with restrictions) respectively.

Frequently asked questions
What does YSK mean, and who needs it?
YSK stands for "yrkessjåførkompetanse" (professional driver competence) and is required for anyone driving passengers commercially with class D, DE, D1 or D1E (bus and minibus). The requirement comes from EU Directive 2003/59/EC, implemented in Norway via Yrkessjåførforskriften (FOR-2008-04-16-362). Once passed, code 95 is stamped on your licence.
How many errors can you have on the YSK passenger transport exam?
The basic exam has 30 questions and you can have a maximum of 4 errors. You need at least 26 of 30 correct to pass. The pass threshold is 85% and is the same at Statens vegvesen.
How long does the exam take and how many questions are there?
The YSK basic exam has 30 questions and you have 90 minutes at Statens vegvesen. The continuing-education exam (etterutdanning) has 20 questions in the same time frame. Questions follow the V859 curriculum.
Is the theory exam alone enough, or do I also need the YSK course?
No. You must complete the 140-hour YSK basic course at an approved driving school in addition to passing the theory exam. You cannot sit the exam without completing the course. The continuing-education course is 35 hours and must be repeated every five years to renew your YSK.
How often must YSK be renewed?
YSK must be renewed every five years by completing 35 hours of continuing education (etterutdanning) at an approved driving school. The course ends with a shorter exam of 20 questions. If you do not renew in time, you lose the right to drive commercially until the course is completed.
How much does the YSK theory exam cost at Statens vegvesen?
Statens vegvesen charges a fee for the Driver CPC (YSK) theory test – see vegvesen.no for the current price. The largest cost is the course fee for the basic course (140 hours) or the periodic training (35 hours) at the driving school.
