An example from the question set

What is a consignment note, and when should it be used?

A document confirming the freight contract and containing information about goods, sender and recipient
An invoice showing the price of transport
An insurance certificate covering the goods during transport
A customs declaration required for all freight transport
Explanation

A consignment note (CMR consignment note for international transport) is a document confirming the freight contract between the sender and carrier. It must contain information about the sender, recipient, nature and quantity of goods, place of delivery and freight terms.

The consignment note is issued in three originals: one for the sender, one accompanies the goods, and one is kept by the carrier. Although the consignment note is not a negotiable instrument, it serves as evidence of the freight contract's contents and the condition of the goods at receipt. For domestic transport, the provisions of vegfraktloven (Road Freight Act) apply.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the full YSK course and the extension course?

The full YSK basic course is 140 hours and is for drivers obtaining YSK for the first time. The extension course is shorter and only for drivers who already hold a YSK for passenger transport and want to extend it to goods — you only cover modules G3 (goods transport conditions) and G4 (loading and securing), not the common subjects.

How many errors can you have on the YSK extension exam?

The extension exam has 25 questions and you can have a maximum of 4 errors. You need at least 21 of 25 correct to pass. The pass threshold is 84% and is the same at Statens vegvesen.

How long does the extension exam take?

You have 90 minutes for the YSK extension exam at Statens vegvesen — the same time as the basic exam, even though there are fewer questions. The 25 questions cover only modules G3 and G4 (goods transport conditions, loading and securing) from the V859 curriculum.

Is the theory exam alone enough, or do I also need to take the extension course?

You must complete the extension course at an approved driving school in addition to passing the theory exam. You cannot sit the exam without completing the course. Once passed, code 95 on your licence is updated to cover both passenger and goods transport.

How often must YSK be renewed?

YSK must be renewed every five years by completing 35 hours of continuing education (etterutdanning) at an approved driving school. This also applies after extending your competence from passenger to goods transport — the continuing-education course then covers both forms of transport.
