An example from the question set
What is a consignment note, and when should it be used?
A consignment note (CMR consignment note in international carriage) confirms the freight contract between the sender and the carrier. It must contain information about the sender, recipient, nature and quantity of goods, place of delivery and freight terms.
In international carriage the contract must always be confirmed by a consignment note (Section 7 of vegfraktloven, the Road Freight Act). A paper consignment note is then made out in three originals signed by both the sender and the carrier: one for the sender, one travels with the goods, and one is kept by the carrier (Section 8). The parties may also agree to use an electronic consignment note (e-CMR), which has the same legal effect (Section 8 a). Domestically a consignment note is also the main rule, but the sender and carrier may agree to do without it, or leave it out where it causes particular inconvenience or is not customary for that type of carriage. Domestically, several copies are made only if one of the parties asks for them, the note is signed by the carrier alone, and the sender receives one copy. The contract is valid even if no consignment note has been issued. The consignment note is not a negotiable instrument, but it is the evidence of what was agreed and of the condition the goods were in when you took them over.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the full YSK course and the extension course?
The initial qualification is 280 hours in the full version, or 140 hours compressed, and is for drivers taking YSK for the first time. The extension course is shorter and only for drivers who already hold a YSK for passenger transport and want to extend it to goods: 70 hours, or 35 hours on the compressed route. You cover modules G3 (goods transport conditions) and G4 (loading and securing) plus part of module 5 with 5 hours of individual driving practice, but not the common subjects. If you choose 35 hours, the same minimum ages apply as after the compressed initial qualification.
How many errors can you have on the YSK extension exam?
The extension exam has 25 questions and you can have a maximum of 4 errors. You need at least 21 of 25 correct to pass. That is the same threshold Statens vegvesen uses.
How long does the extension exam take?
You have 60 minutes for the YSK extension exam at Statens vegvesen. The basic exam is longer — 50 questions in 120 minutes. The 25 questions cover only modules G3 and G4 (goods transport conditions, loading and securing) from the V859 curriculum.
Is the theory exam alone enough, or do I also need to take the extension course?
You must complete the extension course at an approved training provider in addition to passing the theory exam. You cannot sit the exam without completing the course. Once passed, code 95 on your licence is updated to cover both passenger and goods transport.
How often must YSK be renewed?
YSK must be renewed every five years by completing 35 hours of periodic training (etterutdanning) at an approved training provider. There is no exam at the end of the course. This also applies after extending your competence from passenger to goods transport — to keep both, choose combined periodic training for passenger and goods transport, or take at least 7 extra hours for the other form of transport.
