Running out of electric car plate numbers
The Public Roads Administration has now selected new number series for electric cars.
Electric car sales in Norway are booming, and it looks like around 70,000 electric cars will be on Norwegian roads by the end of 2015. The car that gets the last plate number in the current EL series will be electric car number 90,000, and that number isn't far off.
The number series EK and EV have both been set aside for electric cars, and the Roads Administration has now revealed that EK is the next number series to be used for electric cars. The Norwegian Electric Vehicle Association had hoped they would go for EV, since this would have made it easier to spread the good news about Norwegian electric car success abroad. EV stands for "electric vehicle," while EK stands for "elektrisk kjøretøy" (Norwegian for electric vehicle).
In other countries, it is not common to have separate number series for electric cars.
