Don't switch to summer tires yet

The Norwegian Public Roads Administration recommends waiting a bit before switching to summer tires

Don't switch to summer tires yet

The deadline expires this weekend

Studded tires should normally be removed by April 9th in southern and central Norway, but the Norwegian Public Roads Administration is now reminding drivers that they are personally responsible for ensuring their vehicle has adequate road grip. This may mean keeping studded tires on a bit longer.

It’s still cold with a risk of frost at night. The Norwegian Meteorological Institute also thinks it may be wise to wait. Snow could easily fall in lower areas this weekend. Next week, however, looks like good weather for changing tires, with temperatures between 10 and 15 degrees.

What about studless winter tires?

You are allowed to continue driving with studless winter tires, but remember that these have significantly poorer grip on wet asphalt than summer tires, and their grip decreases as temperatures rise. They will also wear faster when temperatures increase.

Exceptions

In Nordland, Troms and Finnmark, you can continue driving with studded tires through April.
