More expensive to tailgate
Those who struggle to keep their distance from the car ahead now face higher fines.
Fine rates were increased from January 1, 2018. In most cases these are small adjustments, but the fine for following too closely behind another vehicle has increased significantly. The lowest rate is now NOK 6,800 if you accept a simplified penalty notice. You also receive 3 penalty points on your license. New drivers should remember that penalty points are doubled during the probationary period, giving you 6 points. The next offense would then result in losing your license.
For more serious cases, fines can reach up to NOK 10,000, and possibly license confiscation if you really struggle to maintain a safe distance.
Police have also told NRK that preventing rear-end collisions is a priority area. You can expect that it won’t just be attentive drivers counting seconds between vehicles ahead, but that police will also be watching closely.
